Journaling: The competition is on every year for Halloween, who can carve the best pumpkin. Eric and I give much thought each year to the design. With that in mind we go and find the pumpkin that meets the criteria of the drawing. The night before Halloween we set out newspaper and get to carving. First, you have to be sure you cut the stem off just right so that it will fit back on and not fall in. Next comes getting the guts of the pumpkin out. You have to make sure you scrape the walls thin enough to get the effect you want, but not so much that too much light shines through. After that comes the careful placement of the design and transferring it onto the pumpkin. The next step is the most important. You have to carefully cut away the pumpkin shell to reveal the perfect design. Once our creation is complete we test it to see if our finished product compares to what we had envisioned. The pumpkin soaks in a tub of water during the night and following day to ensure it does not dry out. On Halloween evening we take the pumpkin over to the in-laws house. ~2009
