journal: Paula and I walked hand-in-hand to our local elementary school, rain or shine, starting in kindergarten. We loved school! Every grade level had its special activities that we looked forward to all summer. We were both big-time bookworms, and we’d immediately dive into the new stories in our readers (and we would typically finish them all long before the end of the school year).
Back-to-school in the 1950s often meant learning that a classmate had been stricken with polio over the summer, but fortunately neither of our families ever had to deal with that tragedy.
Now, even though we live on opposite sides of the continent, we try to get together every summer, and reminisce about those “good old days.”
