My granddaughter, Sydney, was the inspiration for my newest kit in my series, Welcome to My Hometown. This kit is Hometown Royalty. I have a lot more layouts to do using the photos we took of the pageant so this first one doesn't have any journaling.
I'll share with you the "backstory" of this kit if you want to take the time to read it. For my hometown series I always include the "story" behind the kit. Here's the backstory for this kit:
As with many small towns in America, my hometown has a gathering over the Memorial Day weekend called Harrodsburg Heritage Days. It’s a great time to see old classmates, friends and family you haven’t seen for a while, eat some good home cookin’ and enjoy the parade.
There is also a pageant to declare who will reign over the festivities. This was the first year they’ve had a “Junior Miss” category for 10-15-year-olds. Well, seeing as how my oldest granddaughter, Sydney, is 12 and quite the beauty . . . we thought it only appropriate that she enter the pageant if she wanted. She has considerable experience in that kind of thing since she’s loved dressing up in play costumes, wearing princess plastic high heels and prancing around wearing a tiara and junk jewelry around her neck, since she's been a toddler. She knew what "pretty feet" meant by the time she was two years old. When she was a toddler and heard the "whir" of the camera focusing she would strike a beauty-queen pose . . . pretty feet, hand on her hip, and flash a beautiful toothy smile.
Pageant time . . . the announcer says Sydney's name and out she comes from behind the curtain, completely poised, her "milk dud" eyes bright and shining, flashing a beautiful smile adorned by her jewel colored braces . . . is that our baby girl?! I swear there was a slightly audible gasp from the audience as she took her turn across the stage, stopping and twirling. For just a moment I saw a bejeweled plastic tiara on her head, a Cinderella dress dragging the floor with just a glimpse of pink plastic high heels showing underneath . . . but then that vision was gone and the young lady Sydney was back.
Time for the random question . . . Mommy, Daddy, Yay-Yay and Papaw are more nervous than she is. She reaches into the hat to draw out her question . . . What four qualities do you think defines a leader? My heart skips a beat, my mind goes blank and I'm afraid she's having the same reaction to the question. But, no, Sydney calmly takes the microphone from the emcee and talks about courage to speak up for what's right, compassion for others, perseverance, integrity . . . Wow! That's my girl, she nailed it!
Announcement time . . . Sydney is the first Junior Miss of the Harrodsburg Heritage Days. What a perfect photo opportunity! To scrap these special photos I wanted a kit that reflected her femininity and innocence, something soft and sweet. I think I accomplished that in this kit. There's a cute little tiara in the kit as well as lots of delicate flowers and bouquets, pretty pastel backgrounds in textures and florals, some just a bit grungy. There are also several wordarts to use in layouts. Since my granddaughter is a first-level black belt in Taekwondo, I made a special wordart to use on the layouts I do of her. I included it in this kit, just in case you also have a girl who fits this description: She's smart. She's beautiful. And she can kick your butt!
